Start with the visa route, not a passport template
DS-160 uploads and printed interview photographs are different deliverables. Check the instructions for your visa category and interview location before preparing either. A square preview does not establish a correctly sized physical print.
For DS-160 digital preparation, review the linked digital specification: JPEG, square dimensions from 600 to 1200 pixels per side, and no more than 240 kB. Do not apply the passport online-renewal workflow to a visa application.
Glasses: a clear lens is not enough
Teaching scenario: an applicant keeps everyday spectacles on because there is no visible reflection. For a U.S. visa, clear lenses alone do not resolve the rule: remove glasses before retaking the photograph. Do not erase frames with an editor.
There is a rare medical exception when glasses cannot be removed, supported by a signed medical statement. The eyes must still remain unobstructed. Discuss that exception with the receiving post instead of treating an automated warning as a medical decision.
Lighting example: change the setup before editing
Teaching scenario: a ceiling lamp produces dark eye sockets and a shadow on the wall. Keep the same camera and clothes, move to face a large window, and leave space between yourself and the background. Compare both original images at full size.
Look for visible eye detail, balanced brightness on both cheeks, and a plain background. If brightening the whole image washes out one cheek while the other stays dark, move the light or retake the photograph; a brightness slider cannot correct the lighting geometry.
Expression, framing and a misleading green check
Use a neutral expression with both eyes open. A broad, toothy smile changes the mouth and cheek shape; take another frame with the face relaxed. Keep the full head in view rather than zooming until the face fills the square.
A successful upload may only confirm that a file was received. Review the portrait and the consular instructions as well. Do not infer that a green software check is a visa decision, or that increasing resolution can recover a blurred original.
A practical final review
Keep the untouched original and compare it with the output. Check that the selected document is a visa, the face has not been reshaped, and the crop does not cut off the head. For a print, measure the finished photograph after printing; disable automatic fit-to-page scaling.

Is a U.S. visa photo the same as a U.S. passport photo?
Both are 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), but the submission channels differ. DS-160 requires a digital upload within 240 KB; passport renewal has its own upload screen with different file limits. Do not interchange specifications.
Can I wear glasses in my U.S. visa photo?
Since November 2016, the Department of State no longer accepts photos with glasses for visa applications, except for rare documented medical exemptions.
Does a successful tool check guarantee acceptance?
No. A tool check or successful upload is not an official acceptance decision. Keep the original portrait, avoid changing your appearance and retake unsuitable lighting or blur. The receiving authority decides whether the photograph is acceptable.
